Course description: This presentation will address the interconnections between periodontal disease, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Topics discussed include; the development of periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, research findings regarding the association between these disease entities and the imperative to treat perio disease for total body health, not just oral health.

Course outline
- The development and progression of periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes.
- The chronic non-curable nature of perio disease, the inflammatory response, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, risk factors for diabetes, types of diabetes and the mechanisms of the bi-directional relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes.
- Research findings regarding the interconnected nature of the diseases
- The effect of the total inflammatory burden on cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia and diabetic complications, the effect of perio pathogens on hypertension, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis and coronary obstruction, serum markers for cardiovascular disease including C-reactive protein and PLAC-2.
- Treatment of periodontal disease to improve the oral and general health of our patients.
